Just Like A Snowflake
“The thing that is really hard, and really amazing is giving up on being perfect and beginning the work of becoming yourself.”
~ Anna Quindlen
Our daughter brought home a beautiful, paper snowflake she had created in school.
It was so intricate and symmetrical, we were inspired. We picked up scissors and paper. We wanted to see if we could make something that beautiful too.
And so it began. We cut, folded, crimped and experimented. We had successes and failures. Before we knew it, the whole family was involved, and little snips of paper were everywhere.
In the end, more than 30 snowflakes had been created and a new tradition was born.
We’ve all heard how we are each unique, never to be repeated again. Just like a snowflake. And so it is for each moment too.
At this time of year, it’s so easy to be nostalgic, to think back on holidays past that were whiter, when we (or they) were younger, how it was somehow “better.”
It also can be tempting to get caught up in our to-do lists or expectations for how we want it to be, all the things we had hoped to get done by now. (I know I do!)
The true beauty of the season, I was reminded as I was hanging the snowflakes all over our front door, is that each moment is unique, never to be experienced again. That includes this one, right now.
The best traditions and memories usually happen by accident when we are just doing our thing, being curious, open and real in the moment.
Wishing you and your loved ones a miraculous holiday season and Happy New Year! May each day be filled with unexpectedly happy moments.
