Stealing in the Night: A Poem For You
If I didn’t know
any better
I would think
they were trying
to get away with something
Stealing
in the night
Hiding.
Isn’t that what we all do?
When we don’t want to face some truth?
Hiding from ourselves
hiding behind the falsehoods,
grimaces
fake smiles
that we so often
wear.
What if instead
we ripped them off like a fairytale’s costume
and looked
at the remnants
that lay
beneath?
Unbidden treasures
dreams
not yet begun
let alone acknowledged.
Griefs denied
hearts broken
too many times
to count
or to be pieced together.
Anger
bridling up
so scary
we hide and pretend
as if
that would protect us,
armor of denial.
What if we used
paper and pen instead,
creativity
as a weapon
slicing our way
with ink marks and etchings
and found there
something more?
Something lost
beneath the rubble
of emotion
too confusing
too confining
to see through
What if there
under the master of falsehoods
we found
the glistening shimmering of our own light
and this message
You are enough
and it is all okay?
